Job Roles - Producer

Last year, for AS I was also given the role of producer. I felt that I had been given the worse job, because I knew nothing about it and it isn’t a well known role within the industry. I also felt it didn’t require me to do much engaging work. However, once I researched into what a producer does I was glad to be given the job.
The producer has the majority of control over the production of the music video/film. Their primary responsibility is to bring together all different production teams and create and maintain an environment in which the creative talent of the cast and crew can be exposed, in order to create a brilliant production. The producer is required to be present at all stages of production:

Research and Development:
- Producers select the screenwriter, cast and editing team. They also raise the finance, and supervise the development process.

Pre-Production:
- They bring together the key members of the creative team, like te director, cameraperson, and the main cast.
- They also take part in location scouting, approving the final script, production schedule and sort out the budget.

Production:
- Responsible for the day-to-day handlings of the producing team (delegating some practical work to “lower-level” producers).
- Their in constant communication with the director, and other key personnel, off and on set.
- They approve any script changes.

Post-Production and Marketing:
- Producers consult with all creative and financial personnel on the final product.
- They are the primary source of contact for the production partners, investors and distributors.
- Usually involved with the financial and distribution people in planning the marketing and distribution of the finished film.

Producers must be good businesspeople, motivators, creative visionaries. They must also have the ability to spot, and deal with, potential problems before they arise.
They must have a thorough understanding of all creative processes of filmmaking, which includes screenwriting, directing, editing and composing.
Need to be excellent at communicating and have great organizational skills
Producers also have a large legal responsibility, due to different Health and Safety at work laws that are in place.
