Final Evaluation - Question 3

Question 3 – what have you learned from your audience feedback.

During the entire duration of the production process we carried out market research. This was done to aid us in making the best decisions for our target audience. With soca music having a very particular audience it was important for us to establish what the consumer would want and then to decide how we can adapt or modify our texts to suit this.

For example a way in which we have modified our texts is in interactivity. From looking at the research results 30 people said that they spend under £5 on music per week. With that also including spending nothing it Is clear that there is no obvious way for UK residents to buy Soca music legally and contribute to the artist. Within shops such as HMV not stocking soca music due to low and sporadic demand it is clear that the consumer has turned to the internet as their primary method of getting soca music. This is one of the things that influenced our decision to place url addresses for the bands social network pages. The inclusion of the web addresses of websites such as facebook and twitter give the UK listeners a chance to connect with the artist where they would have otherwise been unable to thus increasing the interactivity previously talked about.

Another thing that we learnt is that the connotation of soca music and the Caribbean in deeply entrenched within existing and new listeners this is also a contributing factor to our decision to try and incorporate aspects of Britishness. to conclude the main things learnt from audience feedback is that the internet is key to the distribution of Soca music and as such it is imperative that we include it in some form within our work. Also we learnt that the Caribbean image of tropical sandy beaches in closely linked with the Soca music which is why we decided to attempt to break the mould and go against the stereotypical Soca music video.
