Final Evaluation - Question 4

Question4  – how did you use media technology in the construction research planning and evaluation stages.

Through the Duration of this coursework technology has been integral to delivering the final product. During the research, evaluation and planning stages it was clear that office tools would be used heavily. Programs such as Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel were used. Word and powerpoint were used for presenting research findings in the forms of essays, reports or presentations. Whilst Excel was used for compiling and sorting quantitative data from the research. Microsoft Office became essential during this stage of the coursework as it enabled us to clearly organise our notes and thoughts. We used the office because of its ubiquitous availability and compatibility meaning that documents could easily be edited on the college network as well as at home.

Still during the research, evaluation and planning stages we used the internet as a powerful resource for finding out information. In particular sites that were used the most were video hosting sites such as DailyMotion, Vimeo and Youtube. These sites were used because of the abundance of music videos hosted on these sites. Other sites used for finding information include wikipedia and Reverbnation. The latter was of particular value due to the fact that the information was coming direct from the artist themselves thus meaning that you can guarantee that it is trusted.

With regards to the construction of the actual texts we used a array of different programs. Some of the programs we used included Photoshop and Final cut pro. Photoshop was used for editing of the digipack, magazine advert and parts of the music video. The advantage of using photoshop rather than the design tools within final cut pro is that because it is a dedicated photo editing tool the features are more refined, thus meaning we can create a better quality. This is also the same reason as to why we used it during the construction of the digipack and the magazine advert. Final cut pro is the industry standard and often program of choice by most editors which is one of the reasons we used it. It encompasses a large catalogue of features, effects and tools which can be used in the construction of our music video. The intuitive interface was also helpful in aiding the construction as we could clearly see all the necessary information on the screen at the same time.

In the construction we also used both a digital slr camera and a camcorder. With the camcorder the particular model we used was a Canon xm2. The still camera was used for location scouting and other things whilst the camcorder was used for the primary purpose of recording the footage which would later be used within the music video. Other technology also used included a track and dolly which was used for some shots indoors. Dispute the fact that the shots were not used within the final product using the dolly and tracks was beneficial as it enabled smooth movement of the camera without the need of a Steady-cam. The steady-cam was also briefly used in some shots, and was useful too as it enabled us to shot long takes without the complication of tracks.

Final Evaluation - Question 3

Question 3 – what have you learned from your audience feedback.

During the entire duration of the production process we carried out market research. This was done to aid us in making the best decisions for our target audience. With soca music having a very particular audience it was important for us to establish what the consumer would want and then to decide how we can adapt or modify our texts to suit this.

For example a way in which we have modified our texts is in interactivity. From looking at the research results 30 people said that they spend under £5 on music per week. With that also including spending nothing it Is clear that there is no obvious way for UK residents to buy Soca music legally and contribute to the artist. Within shops such as HMV not stocking soca music due to low and sporadic demand it is clear that the consumer has turned to the internet as their primary method of getting soca music. This is one of the things that influenced our decision to place url addresses for the bands social network pages. The inclusion of the web addresses of websites such as facebook and twitter give the UK listeners a chance to connect with the artist where they would have otherwise been unable to thus increasing the interactivity previously talked about.

Another thing that we learnt is that the connotation of soca music and the Caribbean in deeply entrenched within existing and new listeners this is also a contributing factor to our decision to try and incorporate aspects of Britishness. to conclude the main things learnt from audience feedback is that the internet is key to the distribution of Soca music and as such it is imperative that we include it in some form within our work. Also we learnt that the Caribbean image of tropical sandy beaches in closely linked with the Soca music which is why we decided to attempt to break the mould and go against the stereotypical Soca music video.

Final Evaluation - Question 2

Question 2 - how effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts.

For this question I shall look at the combination of the main product (our music video) and our ancillary texts (our print production work.) Within all our work we attempted to keep a consistent theme or branding of our texts. In doing so we have been able to increase the effectiveness of the texts a example of this would be the usage of bright colours fading into each-other. In the music video this was used when the text was in place. It was used within the print production work heavily as the background. By having this combination the viewer and consumer will be able to recognise that the main and ancillary texts are for the same artist. This is also where branding has also been deployed. As the consumer will be able to instantly recognise a product as being from a artist due to the usage of the bright fading colours.

Another way in which the ancillary text works well with the main product is the usage of bright bold fonts. Within the music video and the print production a serif sans style font has been used. The text is allays in capitals enabling the consumer to recognise the artists products. The simple fact that the same type of font has been used within the music video and the ancillary texts means that somebody who watches the music video will be able to instantly recognise the digipack on the shelf. This I believe creates a strong combination as they both follow a well defined brand.

For the digipack we developed the brand further. We looked to deeply embed the theme of the music video within out digipack and magazine advert. The theme of the music video was the Caribbean in London and we looked to further develop this within the print production texts. For example on the cover of the digipack we used a combination of a distinctive ornate wallpaper style pattern and the brightly coloured background. The ornate pattern represents very traditional British culture. The pattern is often seen with a very bland and dark background. By swapping the background for something more colourful we have a text which connotates a combination of the Caribbean and England.

The theme of mixing both cultures is also continued within the magazine advert. The Britishness is accentuated through the usage of a traditional frame and a red rope barrier. This together creates the image of a traditional British gallery.

To conclude i believe that a effective combination is built between the main text and the ancillary texts with the usage of extensive cross branding between the texts.

The purpose of a music video

Music Video Research

What is a music video for?

A music video is a set motion picture/short film which accompanies a song to enhance it in various different ways. In today’s society there are so many different genres of music which have a music video along with them and they all follow similar techniques to each other. The majority of music video in today’s society play vital role as many of them is solely made to market the song or artist which features in the video. As a lot of music videos nowadays can be viewed at any time due to the rise in use of the internet which sources such as YouTube and social networking sites etc. Unlike in the previous years when the internet wasn’t big phenomenon videos had to be viewed on the TV at specific times. So music videos weren’t as widespread as they are in today’s society.

There are several different types of music video which can be used. There is a narrative based video this type of video mainly focuses on telling a story usually based on the song which may include actors in it to empathise the narrative side of the music video. Another type of music video is a performance based video; this usually focuses on the artist or the band performing the song in the video at a concert, gig or just performing to the camera. Another type of music video is a concept based video: these videos usually have a random concept which may not go with the theme of the song.

In the early 1980s music videos were introduced due to MTV where the station showed pop music as the pop culture was so huge in the 1980s. Creating music videos have come along over the years as there are many different types equipment people can buy which don’t cost a lot of money so many people nowadays can make there own music videos cheaply and upload it onto to sites such YouTube to be seen by everyone to gain exposure. Although in today’s society there are much more resources to use to gain exposure and get notice it also allow much more people who haven’t got as much talent to come through as well which results in it making it harder for the music industry and record companies to spot a good artist as there is so much too look through.

Media Proposal

Media music video Proposal

The music video would start off with an establishing shot of a classroom with a character sitting in the room as he/she is in detention. Then we would see a close up of the characters face sitting down at the desk looking miserable. It would then cut to an eye line match as we see a shot of the clock on the classroom wall. After that we would see a close up of the character at his desk yawing looking miserable. The camera then cuts to behind the character so the audience is able to see the white board at the front of the classroom with the words detention written on it. The whole scene in the classroom would be black and white. We then see an over the shoulder shot the character selecting the music track on his iPod he then slouches over the desk, and then the whole picture goes blurry as he goes into dream and the music gradually starts to get louder. The character then gets ups as he’s still in his dream to see his bottle of 7up change into cocktail glass and his pen change into a horn on the desk. The whole scene then changes into colour. The character then looks at the doorway outside the class room. The camera then cuts to doorway with a girl dancing flamboyantly to the music. The rest of the music video then shows the audience the character having a good time drinking his cocktail and dancing. We also see different shots of him and other people doing the limbo etc. The video then starts to go blurry it then cuts to the character back at his desks slouching he then wakes up to see his cocktail glass change back into the 7up bottle and his horn change back into the pen. The whole scene then changes back into black and white. Then the character turns around and looks at the clock, grabs his bag and then leaves.

Job Roles - Producer

Last year, for AS I was also given the role of producer. I felt that I had been given the worse job, because I knew nothing about it and it isn’t a well known role within the industry. I also felt it didn’t require me to do much engaging work. However, once I researched into what a producer does I was glad to be given the job.
The producer has the majority of control over the production of the music video/film. Their primary responsibility is to bring together all different production teams and create and maintain an environment in which the creative talent of the cast and crew can be exposed, in order to create a brilliant production. The producer is required to be present at all stages of production:

Research and Development:
- Producers select the screenwriter, cast and editing team. They also raise the finance, and supervise the development process.

Pre-Production:
- They bring together the key members of the creative team, like te director, cameraperson, and the main cast.
- They also take part in location scouting, approving the final script, production schedule and sort out the budget.

Production:
- Responsible for the day-to-day handlings of the producing team (delegating some practical work to “lower-level” producers).
- Their in constant communication with the director, and other key personnel, off and on set.
- They approve any script changes.

Post-Production and Marketing:
- Producers consult with all creative and financial personnel on the final product.
- They are the primary source of contact for the production partners, investors and distributors.
- Usually involved with the financial and distribution people in planning the marketing and distribution of the finished film.

Producers must be good businesspeople, motivators, creative visionaries. They must also have the ability to spot, and deal with, potential problems before they arise.
They must have a thorough understanding of all creative processes of filmmaking, which includes screenwriting, directing, editing and composing.
Need to be excellent at communicating and have great organizational skills
Producers also have a large legal responsibility, due to different Health and Safety at work laws that are in place.

Famous Producers
1171 Production group is a well known company that has produces for music videos. With their producers working with artists like 50 Cent, Def Leppard, t.A.t.U, and Brian McKnight.

Second Interview

1. What would you like to see in a soca music video?
More information about how they create the music and videos (i.e. studio shots, performance), stuff about their lives, information about carnivals and how they create all the costumes.

2. What aspects of modern music videos do you like?
Finding out more about the artists, things they’re into, how they create their music, and their imaginations and how they use it.

3. How do you feel about certain representations presented in modern music videos?
It shows what kind of artists they are, how shallow or open their minds are, how great their imagination is or not, and how much money they have to spend.

4. Do you think soca music videos are easier to create than mainstream music videos? Why?
I think they are harder to create because they don’t have the budget hat mainstream videos have. If they had the same budget then their music videos would be completely different.

5. Do you prefer it when lyrics match the occurrences in the video?

I do not prefer it, I like to be surprised, I like my thoughts to be provoked with images that don’t simply imitate the lyrics. It makes you think in a different way to when I hear the lyrics. I like my brain to be stimulated.

Evaluation

Q4. How did you use media technologies in construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Record Label Research

the Caribbean is a very diverse place and that is reflected in the many different varietys of music coming from the Caribbean. Thus the Caribbean music industry is not your typical music industry.
For example the usage of a 'Riddim' is something that is not commonly found outside the Caribbean. The word 'Riddim' was derived from the Jamaican Patois pronunciation of the English word "rhythm." it refers to a instrumental which is made by a producer. Many artists can then use this riddim as a instrumental for their songs.

Due to stringent copyright laws within the uk it is unlikely that this would happen, however the trend has spread throught the caribbean. With the usage of the riddim it allowed unknown artists to become more know. Often record labels would release compliation albums of a specific riddim.

For this type of system to work it is hevily reliant on producers to produce the actual riddims. It is common for producers to have a 'signature' within their work to make their riddims / instrumentals instantly recognisable. Often on album artwork the producer would be featured to highlight the producer. Some of the notable producers include 'Madmen Productions and Martian Music

with such a variety in the music types there are multiple record labels. A large number of record labels for the Caribbean are actually founded or operated outside the caribbean in either the UK or the US. Some of the record labels from outside the caribbean are The Island Def Jam Music Group, VP Records, and Madhouse Records. Some of the record labels from inside the caribbean include Ice Records, question mark entertainment, and dynamic entertainment. Dispite the abundance of record labels there are a few artists who operate independantly (such as machel montano,) although this is not done due to the level of competion. Only well established artists have been able to suceed using this method.

Location Scouting

Introduction
the following images are from when our group conducted a location search. there are four proposed locations we visited. in the final music video only three locations can be seen as we decided not to use 1B.

Location 1A:
location 1A is a park we visited in Kenton, we visited the play area. this is where we wished to conduct shots of the dancers dancing their dance as a playground is a happy environment and we wished to bring that across within the music video.

Location 1B:
location 1B is another park which we considered using. We did not use it due to the fact it did not fit the archetypal image of a park we were looking for, this was due to the lack of greenery. in hind-site due to the fact that we were filming in winter neither location 1A or 1B had much greenery, however we still felt that 1A was more fitting as a location. (during the location search we arrived here in the late evening, thus the pictures were taken in the dark)

Location 2:
Location 2 was the Tabernackles building, we used this location in the final music video. Although the building can not be seen (as in the pictures,) we filmed directly outside the gate and the lady's in the video can be seen walking together into the gate.

location 3:
the final location is a combination of lots of locations that were close together. As such we grouped them into one category. location 3 covers central London and in particular Hyde Park, Piccadilly Circus, and South Bank

Job Roles : Director

As director during the duration of the coursework I effectively took creative control of the project. The main aim or purpose of the director included bringing a vision of a music video to reality. Thus duties delegated to me included:
  • deciding on different locations
  • deciding on which type of shots to shoot
  • instructing the editor as to how it should be edited
  • various other duties
being the director meant that I had to take into consideration many different factors when making decisions. In order to do so many different skills were needed such as:
  • knowledge of editing
  • knowledge of camera-work
  • attention to detail
  • the ability to work towards deadlines
  • leadership in order to coordinate the filming process

A passion for directing is also useful as the process of directing can become tedious over time.

Poster - the evolution and final design

the final poster:

textual analysis of similar ancillary texts

Within this essay I shall do a in-depth textual analysis of similar print production products. throughout I shall look at key areas such as text/ placement, audience, conventions, technical codes, symbolic codes, cultural codes, and representation. within this post I shall look at a single cover for single cover for soca artist Tele Cruz's single 'Sail Away.'

with the text being a cover for a single it is likely to appear on the shelf of stores along with the disk and supplementary content. It is also possible that the cover artwork could be seen in a online music store, the artists website and adverts.

With regards to the conventions the cover includes the conventional information such as artist, supporting artist and the name of the track. However there are conventions specific to the Caribbean region. A example of this is the badge with the text “brand new riddim for 2k11” which refers to the backing track of the song.

As in the Caribbean it is common for multiple tracks to use the same instrumental, this can be used to attract people who like other songs with the same instrumental. Other information which is only found within the Caribbean region is the information about who it was produced by and who mixed and mastered the track. This information is not commonly displayed on CD covers from other parts of the world.

The different fonts used for different information is something that has been done to make key information easily accessible. For example the artists names are in yellow enabling somebody to pick up the cover and see who the artist is without extensive reading. The usage of a different font in a bigger size for the song title helps to not only improve the accessibility of the information but to help this cover stand out on the shelf. The usage of a 'sparkle' to the sail away text helps to make it appear special and not your average single cover.

I believe that the cover represents the soca genre very distinctly through the usage of items which the listener would link with the Caribbean and soca music. In particular the usage of sand, palm trees and a yacht are all symbolic of the Caribbean helping to bild the image of the tropical islands. This is further reinforced by what the artists are wearing. For example the sandals, shorts, sleeveless top and sunglasses immediately reminds listeners of the Caribbean and consequently soca music.

Digi-pack - the evolution and final design

The final Digi-pack:

Similar media content analysis - Music Video

within this essay I shall do a indepth analysis of the music video 'You' by soca artist Shurwayne Winchester. Through I will look at key areas such as narrative/ performance, star image, lighting / colour, and camera work/ editing.. The video is embedded below.

narrative and performance
Within the music video there is one main narrative in which the protagonist Shurwayne Winchester runs around the city inspiring people to “release the energy” as the lyrics suggest. He inspires people in two locations. The first being the gym where he inspires a group of cyclists and the second being at a wedding where he instigates people dancing.

During this the video cuts away to a scene in a disused warehouse where he has been tied up and being tortured by a lady. This itself differentiates the music video from conventional soca videos which depict the male singer as the guy who gets all the girls. In this video this is not even a factor as it focuses more on inspiring people to have fun. The tables are also reversed due to the fact that he is being tortured by a woman placing her in the power.

At the end of the music video like most Caribbean music videos it features another song as a method of using the original songs popularity to promote a upcoming song. The song featured at the end is “Make Love.” With the change in song, the music video changes completely to a scene in which Shurwayne is making love. From this it is clear to establish a link between the lyrics / title of the song to the narrative of the music video.

Despite the extensive use of a narrative there is also the usage of a performance shots in which the camera is tracking the protagonist as he walks around the city. Also shots feature him being chased by a truck, and once again as the lyrics suggest he is able to “release the energy” and push back the truck.

star image
as mentioned above this music video does invert some of the conventions of soca music videos. The simple usage of costumes has a impact on the star image. For example rather than the skimpy bikinis often featured in music videos the women are more covered up taking away the focus from them and to the music and having fun. Even during the end of the music video the lady is wearing a vest top so as not to distract from the music or the star Shurwayne.

However in covering up the women Shurwayne has also lost a top. This could be considered as him objectifying himself in order to appeal to his female fans. This is done through the usage of fragmented body shots which contribute to the sexualisation of him.

lighting and colour
with regards to colour yet again the music video differs from your typical soca music video as there is not extensive vibrant colours but instead the colours are slightly desaturated. The colour replicates that of a old photograph.

With the majority of the video being outdoors a lot of the lighting used is simply natural light. A lens flare can actually be seen when the sun is in the shot. However indoors the lighting used in the torture scenes is a hard light which creates the strong shadows that can be seen. In contrast when he is inspiring other people softer light is used, I believe this is done to replicate the florescent lights used indoors.

camera-work and editing
within the video a variety of camera shots are used, however one of the most notable is the usage of a mid shot which tracks Shurwayne as he staggers around the city. The shot tracks him as he walks around the city whilst performing the lyrics direct to camera.

During the torture scenes there is extensive usage of mid shots. However the camera is hardly ever static it is usually tracking the lady's actions. Different angles are also used, for example within the beginning a low angle is used to show the people jumping in the air, whilst in the end a high angle shot is used to during the bedroom sequence.

The usage of a variety of angles, moments types and shot types helps to keep the music video interesting throughout. It also enables the video to keep up a pace that matches the upbeat music.

Music Video Review: JW & Blaze - Palance

JW & Blaze are an up and coming soca duo from Trinidad. The pair burst on to the scene with their high energy song Palance which managed to help them win the Trinidad and Tobago road march this carnival. The term palancing is a word which originated from islands in the Caribbean such as Jamaica from the three phrases ‘Party lime and dance.’ These words have been combined and also share a collective meaning. To Palance is to have fun and let go of all your troubles thus, it would make sense for the video to be high energy. Although due to the nature of the song I was unsure about wither it was good, surprisingly I found that the narrative within the music video made the song have more meaning.

The music video does not jump straight into the song, but starts off with a narrative in which we can all relate to. The annoying supervisor (or in my case teacher,) who enjoys giving you tonnes of work to do. After JW talks to his friend he decides to confront the supervisor about this in which he decides to abandon his work and Palance.

The usage of the narrative helps to set up the song, thus helping to give the viewer more understanding of the meaning behind the song. The usage the antagonist (JW) who just wants to have fun is reflective of what a lot of people were feeling after the harsh recession that had just ended prior to the songs release. By setting up the song like this the viewer already feels a connection to the singer thus, representing the artist as normal and just like any other guy. This technique is used by a lot of urban grime artists who want their listeners to relate to them thus enabling more sales.
The song then starts with the whole office erupting into a wild party. Confetti is seen to be falling from the ceiling helping to add to party scene. This gives a community feel as all the office has come together to party. Thus he has represented himself as the community man who is doing the song to help people enjoy themselves, all the way through enabling the viewer to empathise with him.

As they dance around the office more and more people abandon their work giving in to the temptation of the sweet soca music. Through the beginning of the song creatively they have used one shot which follows the Congo line around the office although the format seemed slightly tired by 2.00 minutes which is when the video takes a quirky turn. To keep the viewer interested there is the rather random appearance of a life size blue Elmo! Dancing with one of the office workers it kept me watching to see what would appear next in the video, barney? At the moment when I thought that I had seen it all there was more, a bouncy castle has appeared within the office!

The music video then takes the palancing nationwide showing gorillas in the jungle having fun aswell as JW and blaze performing the song in front of the crowd. This helps to still maintain their star image whilst being normal enough for the viewer to empathise with them.

Although during this they break up the performance with the two palancing together in front of a their lyrics which appear behind them in bright carnival colours. I felt that this was slightly out of place simply because it did not fit in with the entire theme of Palancing.

At the end of the music video we see JW back inside the office as he starts to palance only to find that what had just happened was only a vision. When he sits back down on his desk he is confused by his work college being replaced by Elmo next to him.

Nevertheless the video as a whole was a great success in my eyes. I like this video because of the inclusion of quirky twists and the fact that it was set in a familiar setting. With a entertaining narrative adding to the song, I found myself wanting to palance too.
